The Days of the Week / Los Días de la Semana
There are two important things to know about the days of the week in Spanish that differ from their counterparts in English:
- The days are NEVER capitalized (unless they are the first word of a sentence or title); and
- The first day of the week on a Spanish calendar is Monday (lunes), not Sunday (domingo).

Looking at the days of the week vocabulary above, have you noticed that two of the Spanish words have accents on them? These accent marks are very important to remember as they signal place the stress of the word on that particular symbol. If you were to remove the accent, the word would be pronounced differently (and incorrectly). This is because when a word ends in a vowel in Spanish it is always stressed on the second-to-the-last syllable. If this rule is ever broken, an accent is placed over the correct syllable in which we need to place the stress. Therefore, the accent over the first "a" in "sábado" let's us know that we should pronoun the word as [SAH-bah-doh] instead of how it would be pronounced had there not been an accent [sah-BAH-doh]. Spanish accents are fun, and you learn more about them by clicking here.
A great way to learn Spanish vocabulary quickly is through song. Here is a YouTube video with song whose tune you might recognize. My students love it, and they always end up learning to recite the Days of the Week in Spanish quickly.
